Travelling in Romagna with your dog on public transport, by bus or train, is straightforward: simply comply with the specific rules and regulations of the companies that provide public transport services. Generally speaking, the transport of pets in the Romagna provinces of Ferrara, Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena and Rimini varies from city to city and province to province. Most public transport companies allow pet owners to travel with their furry friends, albeit with some restrictions.
It is customary for small animals, those that can be carried in a handbag or pet carrier, to be allowed on public transport with their owners without any problems. For larger animals, the use of a leash and muzzle is generally required. The Italian State Railways apply their own internal regulations, with specific guidelines so as to allow animals to travel on board trains.
We advise those travelling in Romagna with their dog and intending to use public transport to consult the regulations of the individual local and national transport companies as listed below.
The basic rule remains that of politeness and good manners: It is essential that pet owners and/or handlers make sure that their animals do not disturb people or damage property.

Generally, dogs, cats, and other small pets can travel for free on trains if they are in pet carriers. Even larger dogs may board trains; each passenger may travel with a dog of any size, with the appropriate ticket for the desired route, provided that the dog is kept on a leash and is wearing a muzzle.
Furthermore … if you do not use public transport to get around, remember that Romagna has hundreds of kilometres of cycle paths.
For those who enjoy cycling, once you have reached Romagna, you can hire cargo bikes (dog taxis) and electric bikes with baskets to transport your four-legged friends. These “Bike-a-Dog” services are now available at bike hire centres everywhere along the Riviera.
